Free Author Events for this Summer Term
24 April, 2024Spark your pupils’ imaginations and boost their writing prowess with one of the FREE author events taking place this summer term. From books inspired by real historical events to imaginary worlds full of magical creatures, there is an event to cater for all reading ages and interests.
Events for the last few weeks of term:
- Scholastic Schools Live: Best-selling author Simon James Green introduces his new middle-grade novel The Double Life of Ted Amos in this online author event on Monday 24th June.
- Suitable for pupils aged 9+
- Scholastic Schools Live: Spoken word poet, actor and author Ella McLeod introduces her genre-defying new book The Map That Led to You in an on line event for Pride Month on Tuesday 25th June.
- Suitable for pupils aged 13+
- Mr Dilly Meets: Join Mr Dilly and top children’s authors for a summer bonanza of book chat, stories and fun on Tuesday 25th June. Authors include Andy Griffiths, Danny Wallace, Alistair Chisholm, GM Linton, Radhika Sanghani, Julia Green, Cathy Fitzgerald and Michelle Harrison.
- Suitable for pupils aged 6+
- Waterstones Virtual School Visit: Historian, broadcaster and author Alice Roberts takes pupils on a journey into the Ice Age as she introduces her debut children’s novel Wolf Road and talks about the real archeological discoveries that informed it on Tuesday 25th June.
- Suitable for pupils aged 10-14
- Scholastic Schools Live: Celebrate the inaugural Scholastic Graphic Novel Prize and hear from some of the shortlisted authors in this Younger Readers Shortlist Showcase event on Wednesday 26th June. Don’t forget that voting is now open for children across the country to pick this year’s winner.
- Suitable for pupils aged 6+
- Scholastic Schools Live: Get a behind-the-scenes peek into the creative worlds of some of the author/illustrators shortlisted for this year’s Scholastic Graphic Novel Prize in this Older Readers Shortlist Showcase on Thursday 27th June. Don’t forget that voting is now open for young people across the country to pick this year’s winner.

- Scholastic Schools Live: Hear some of the graphic novel creators shortlisted for this year’s Scholastic Graphic Novel Prize talk about their work in this Teen Shortlist Showcase on Friday 28th June. Voting is now open for young people across the country to pick this year’s winner.
- Suitable for pupils aged 13+
- British Library: Explore Black British History through music, song and stories with Jeffrey Boakye, author of the award-winning Musical Truth: A Musical Journey through Modern Black Britain on Monday 1st July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 12-16
- ReadingZone Live: Discover what life was like in Roman Britain as award-winning author Tony Bradman talks about his latest historical novel Roman Boy on Friday 5th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 9-12
- Scholastic Schools Live: What makes a gripping dystopia and what can dystopian worlds teach us about issues in society today? Authors Sharada Keats and L.M. Nathan share their thoughts as they discuss their debut novels These Stolen Lives and The Virtue Season on Monday 8th July.

- Scholastic Schools Live: Celebrate the magic of storytelling with author Cerrie Burnell as she shares her wild belief in unicorns and introduces her latest novel The Night of the Unicorn Dance on Monday 8th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 7+
- Scholastic Schools Live: Author Adam Connors introduces the Stillness, a lawless otherworld inspired by real-life science and the setting for his YA novel Find Me After on Tuesday 9th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 14+
- Scholastic Schools Live: Join author Helen Docherty and illustrator Brizida Magro for a gentle storytime and draw-along inspired by their new picture book All the Things We Carry on Tuesday 9th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 2+
- Mr Dilly Meets: Journey into the fantasy world of Podkin One-Ear as award-wining author Kieran Larwood discusses world-building, storytelling and more with Mr Dilly on Wednesday 10th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 7+
- Scholastic Schools Live: Celebrate the wonderful world of nature in our back gardens with Betsy Buglove as author Catherine Jacob and illustrator Lucy Fleming lead a fun-filled storytime and draw-along session inspired by Betsy Buglove and the Brave Butterfly on Wednesday 10th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 3+
- Waterstones Virtual School Visit: Ross Montgomery introduces his new adventure story I am Rebel and explores how he brings his animal characters to life in an online event on Wednesday 10th July.
- Suitable for pupils aged 7-11
