Grammar as Choice provides research-informed resources to support the teaching of grammar in the context of children’s writing, rather than as a separate, stand-alone subject.
The Grammar as Choice pedagogy is based on a grammar-writing relationship that involves:
- Explicit teaching of grammatical points that are relevant to the learning about writing.
- Developing young writers’ understanding of how language choices make meaning using authentic texts as models.
- Supporting young writers to develop an understanding of the language choices they can make in their own writing.
Resources include:
- The four principles of the Grammar for Writing pedagogy and examples of how these work in practice.
- How to link a grammar feature to a writing purpose and use model texts to provide examples.
- Sample lesson plans and schemes
- Resources to support writing across the secondary curriculum, highlighting how grammar and patterns of language can be used to develop academic writing and an ‘expert’ voice.
- CPD resources to support teachers’ own grammar subject knowledge.
- Resources to promote metalinguistic talk about writing to help young people develop their understanding about the language choices available to them as writers.
Cost: Free.
