Literacy for Learning is the National Literacy Trust’s secondary school improvement programme. It provides training courses for literacy leaders and teachers on all aspects of literacy within the secondary curriculum.

The programme is divided into eight Training Pathways, each containing a sequence of related training courses that build skills and understanding in a specific area of literacy:

  • Leading literacy in secondary schools, including termly Leading Literacy briefings for reading, writing and oracy. These short webinars cover the latest research evidence and provide guidance on how to turn strategic literacy priorities into tangible actions and outcomes.
  • Introducing disciplinary literacy
  • Supporting struggling readers.
  • Disciplinary reading, reading for pleasure and phonics
  • Developing disciplinary literacy within subject areas
  • Disciplinary oracy in the secondary curriculum
  • Developing disciplinary writing in the secondary curriculum
  • Supporting English teachers

Courses can be booked as an online scheduled ticketed course or as a group or whole-school INSET training session. Whole school sessions are available online or face-to-face and take place on a mutually agreed date.

Cost: Starting from £45 for a single booking for an online scheduled course. Online group sessions start from £1400. Costs for face-to-face sessions available on request.

About National Literacy Trust: NLT is an independent literacy charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life. The charity runs literacy programmes, CPD training courses for teachers, and provides online resources and tools to its members. It also undertakes research into all aspects of literacy and campaigns to raise awareness of literacy issues.
