Poetry Prompts is Joseph Coelho’s flagship project as the Waterstones Children’s Laureate (2022-2024). For the project, Coelho has created a series of short (under 10 minutes), weekly videos that aim to demystify poetry and empower young people to write and perform their own poems.

Each video explores a different subject or poetic technique and brings it to life in a fun and creative way. The videos are released on a Monday morning on the BookTrust website and, over the course of Coelho’s laureateship, will create a library of over 70 Prompts that can be shared with KS1 and KS2 pupils.

Cost: Free

Literacy Hive Likes:

  • Watching the new Poetry Prompt each week is a quick and easy way to raise the profile of poetry in your classroom.
  • The videos are short and can be used flexibly – either as a fun morning activity or as an introduction to a whole poetry lesson.
  • Download the accompanying teaching notes from CLPE for more ideas on how to use poetry to help pupils improve their understanding of language, inspire their own writing and develop speaking and listening skills.
  • Display the free I Am a Poet poster as a visual reminder to pupils to have a go at writing their own poetry.
  • Read how one Primary English Lead has used the Poetry Prompts in her classroom to support teaching and learning.
