Literacy Shed

From EdShed

Resource type: Lesson plans and teaching aids

Price band: Free

Key stage: KS1, KS2

Region(s): All of UK

The Literacy Shed provides free access to a wide range of high quality films and animations that can be used in the primary classroom to inspire and support pupils’ own writing.

The films are arranged thematically and can be used to support a stand-alone literacy lesson, or to form the basis for a whole literacy unit. While most of the resources can be used in KS1 and KS2, some films are better suited to the upper age groups and it is recommended that teachers watch any film before they show it to their class.

Fully resourced unit plans based on Literacy Shed films are available on a subscription basis from Literacy Shed+.

Cost: Access to the films is free.

About The Literacy Shed: The Literacy Shed was set up by Rob Smith, a former primary teacher and literacy lead and co-author of a number of books, including 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Reading and Modelling Exciting Writing.

Literacy Hive Likes:

  • Films can be watched on the Literacy Shed website, YouTube or Vimeo.
  • The films and animations come from a wide range of sources, including adverts and student short films.
  • Many of the films come with teaching or writing prompts and cross-curricular links.
  • CPD courses that explore how to use still and moving images to raise standards in reading and writing are also available.
