The Picture Book Club is a fully-resourced, peer-led book club programme for primary schools. The programme supports older pupils to read a picture book to small groups of Year 1 pupils and then lead a short group discussion about the story and pictures.

The aim of the programme is to inspire younger pupils to become readers, help older students develop their confidence and communication skills, and promote a reading for pleasure culture throughout the school.

Participating schools receive:

  • A selection of 15 picture books, carefully chosen to provide a diverse range of authors and styles. (Choose from one of two boxes.)
  • Guidance on how to run a simple training session for book club leaders.
  • Prompt cards for book club leaders to help them lead each session.
  • Booklets for book clubbers to record and rate the books they have read, with a fun activity for each title.
  • Bookmarks, stickers and badges.

Cost: £125 per year. Books and resources are sent out at the beginning of each half term for orders placed before the end of the previous half term.

About Book Clubs in Schools: Book Clubs in Schools was founded in 2014 by Beth Ginsburg and Ali Palmer with the aim of strengthening pupils’ engagement in reading and improving their communication skills, particularly for those at a socio-economic disadvantage. It has been a charity since 2019.

Literacy Hive Likes:

  • The Picture Book Club provides a way to ensure that younger pupils can experience being read to regularly, particularly if they are not read to at home.
  • A great way for older students to build their own reading fluency and develop leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Peer support programmes can help strengthen the whole school community.
  • The Picture Book Club programme has been successfully trialled in a number of primary schools.
  • Book Clubs in Schools also runs a peer-led book club programme for secondary schools as well as the Summer Book Club to support new Year 7 pupils transitioning into secondary school.
